Palliative Care Education Workshop -
an interdisciplinary workshop
Cancer Care Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia HomeCare Association are pleased to offer a Palliative Care Education Workshop. This is a four-session workshop over eight days designed to enhance the care provided to palliative care patients and their families in all care settings in Nova Scotia.

The workshop is focused on the provision of education for all members of the front-line care team, including family caregivers. During the four sessions, participants will engage in an interactive program, which includes lectures, exercises, small and large group discussions, and the application of theory to cases. Topics to be covered include:

  • Dealing With Death Personally
  • Interdisciplinary Team
  • Cultural Considerations in Hospice Palliative Care
  • Pain Management: the Basics
  • Understanding the Dying Person and Pain Management
  • Symptom Management
  • Personal Care and Symptom Management
  • Communication
  • Spiritual Considerations
  • Family-Centered Care
  • Pediatric Palliative Care
  • The Dying Process
  • Legal Issues
  • Funeral Planning
  • Grief and Bereavement
  • Self-Care and Closure

The program is offered by District Health Authorities and other partners. The Palliative Care Front Line Education program is a component of the core curriculum for Practical Nurses and Continuing Care Assistants trained in Nova Scotia. It is non-technical in nature and is suitable for family caregivers.
